Managing Pests on Phalaenopsis Orchids
Pest management is a normal part of growing orchids. Mealybugs, scale, mites, and other pests can occasionally appear even in well-maintained collections. Early detection and proper treatment are the keys to preventing a small problem from becoming a serious infestation.

Consider removing the flowers on an infested plant. Blooms can provide additional hiding places for pests and can make thorough treatment more difficult. On a newly arrived plant with an active infestation, removing the flowers may make treatment and monitoring easier.
Treat pests promptly and persistently. Most orchid pests require repeated treatments because eggs or immature stages may survive the initial treatment. Consistency is key to preventing reinfestation.

Mealybugs
Mealybugs can infest nearly all parts of a Phalaenopsis, including leaves, flower spikes, leaf joints, and roots. Because they can move from plant to plant, early treatment and isolation are important.
Effective control requires thorough treatment and follow-up. When using an appropriate insecticide, treat all exposed plant surfaces according to the product label, paying particular attention to leaf joints, the undersides of leaves, and other areas where mealybugs can hide.
A single treatment may not eliminate all life stages. Repeat treatments are often necessary to control newly emerged mealybugs before they mature and reproduce. Continue monitoring the plant after treatment, and if mealybugs reappear, consider rotating to a product with a different insecticide mode of action.

Systemic Insecticides
The following are examples of systemic insecticides containing dinotefuran that may be used for mealybug control where permitted by the product label.

Spider Mites
Spider mites are tiny pests that can cause significant damage to Phalaenopsis orchids. Thin-leaved Phalaenopsis species and hybrids can be particularly susceptible to mite damage. Spider mites can reproduce very quickly under warm, dry conditions.
Unlike mealybugs and scale, spider mites are not insects. They are related to spiders and require a somewhat different approach to treatment.
How to Identify Spider Mites
Spider mites are extremely small and may be difficult to see without magnification. Often, the first indication of an infestation is damage to the leaves rather than the mites themselves.
Look for:
- Fine pale or silvery stippling on the leaves
- Numerous tiny dots that give the leaf a faded or mottled appearance
- Damage that is especially noticeable on the underside of the leaves
- Tiny moving dots when examined closely
- Very fine webbing in more advanced infestations

Mite damage on a Phalaenopsis leaf. Feeding damage can appear as fine stippling, silvery or bronzed discoloration, and a dull, rough-looking leaf surface. Mites themselves may be difficult to see without magnification.
Note: Not all damaging mites produce webbing. Flat mites (sometimes called false spider mites) can also attack Phalaenopsis and may cause pitted or pockmarked leaf damage without visible webs. A magnifying glass can help when mite damage is suspected.
Immediate Treatment
If spider mites are suspected, isolate the affected plant from the rest of your collection.
Begin by physically removing as many mites as possible. Thoroughly rinse the plant with water, paying particular attention to the undersides of the leaves. Leaves can also be gently wiped with rubbing alcohol.
Avoid allowing alcohol to collect in the crown or remain on tender flowers, buds, or new growth.
Check nearby orchids carefully because mites can easily spread from plant to plant.
Insecticidal Soap
For a small home collection, insecticidal soap is one of the simplest treatments.
Thoroughly spray the entire plant, including both sides of every leaf. Good coverage is essential because insecticidal soap works by direct contact.
One treatment is usually not enough.
Repeat treatment approximately every 5β7 days for at least 3 treatments. This helps control mites that hatch after the previous treatment.
Always follow the directions on the product label. Avoid treating plants that are heat- or drought-stressed, and test unfamiliar products on a small area first if you are concerned about leaf sensitivity.
Miticides for More Serious Infestations
Persistent infestations or large orchid collections may require a miticide specifically labeled for spider mites on ornamental plants.
One example is TetraSan (etoxazole). Etoxazole primarily targets mite eggs and immature stages and is not relied upon to kill adult mites. Because different life stages may be present at the same time, additional or follow-up treatment may be necessary for effective control.
Always read and follow the pesticide label. Products should only be used on plants and in locations permitted by the label.
Continue Monitoring
Do not assume the mites are gone simply because you no longer see them.
Continue inspecting the plant for several weeks, particularly the undersides of the leaves. A magnifying glass can be helpful.
Existing mite damage will not disappear after treatment. Damaged areas of the leaf will remain visible. Instead, watch for new damage. If the infestation has been successfully controlled, the damage should stop progressing and new growth should remain healthy.
Prevention
Inspect your orchids regularly, especially during warm, dry weather. Periodically rinsing the foliage with water can help physically remove mites before populations become established.
When adding new orchids to an existing collection, keep them separated initially and inspect the leaves carefully before placing them among your other plants.
Early detection makes spider mites much easier to control.
