This species require bright light and good air circulation. If requirement is not met, this species is prone to develop bacterial rot. Recommend only for experienced grower with miniature species.
For Phal. gigantea, I would keep it in sphagnum while the plant is still small, especially in a 2.5‑inch pot. They establish better that way and stay evenly moist without stressing young roots.
This species can easily develop rot when conditions aren’t right. In nature, it grows higher on the tree where it gets strong air movement. It originates from Indonesia, so it does not tolerate cold well. Wet roots combined with cool temperatures will lead to rot very quickly. During the winter months, I kept these on a heat mat so the root zone stayed around 70°F.
Once they get larger, you have more flexibility. They can be:
-
mounted,
-
grown in a basket with moss, or
-
grown in a bark/moss mix if you prefer using a plastic pot.
